Time to Get Fowler? (Traded to Cubs)

Now that the Astros have acquired Gattis, it appears that they are open to dealing Dexter Fowler. Fowler seems to be one of the better trade targets available right now for the Orioles. He can immediately fill the need for a leadoff hitter and outfielder. What he does not bring is power and long-term control.

What would be a reasonable return for one year of Fowler?

What would it take? After Gausman, Bundy and Harvey, I would put pretty much anybody on the table to make it happen. I would think Miguel Gonzalez would be very interesting to them as an established MLB ready pitcher under team control. I would hate to lose him but he is 30 years old. Miguelito plus Lough or Alvarez? Huge loss to our team, but we currently have six starters and a huge void in the leadoff spot.

One year of Fowler at $9mil is probably not worth a proven MLB starter.

The Astros seem to be stockpiling young pitching so I'd think someone like Wright would be a place to start.

He is controlled through 2016 so it would be two years. I have a feeling that a second tier prospect is not going to be enough.

Way too much. I'd move Lough and Wright/Berry.

You are right, my bad (as usual).

So how does it change the deal you proposed?

Also, cost-controlled is what the Astros will want. So 6 cheap years of a guy like Wright could be fair for one year of a $9 OF with questionable defense.

    • No real interest for me in either Pillar or Hicks due to the extremely minimal impact that either is likely to make as the 26th man on the roster.  Hays is getting ready to come back. So there will be no need use for any except for the possibility to take ABs/playing time away from a young player who needs the experience/reps.
    • It's also a bit different having very few guys with options so if you lean hard on a guy, and he has options you can send him down for a fresh arm for a bit. The shuttle bus is much smaller this year and we have a bunch of guys who would be claimed if they were DFA'd. (Not Ramirez).
    • Hello everyone. I wanted to introduce John Eisenberg who is releasing a bunch of his interviews that he did when he was interviewing former players, managers and executives for his book about Orioles history. John reached out and asked how he can get these to Orioles fans and i suggested he join up and post them here. While I know everyone is excited and talking about the Orioles now, this a great opportunity to learn more about the past and ask John any questions that he may have. Welcome to the board John and thanks for sharing your tapes and accounts here at the Hangout.
    • I looked at Pillar's Fangraphs page yesterday and came to the same conclusion. If Pillar was still a gold glove level fielder he wouldn't be on waivers and would at least have been traded for a prospect.
    • I think we might see Akin.  Unfortunately, he's likely to be sent down when Means is activated, so he can rest up while he's in Norfolk.   Then again, Baumann might be pitching for his Oriole life tonight.
    • Thanks. I was wondering about that too when I heard that on the broadcast and was wondering if the rule changed about relievers who close an inning, but haven't faced three batters. @Frobbymakes a good point that this Orioles team is usually in competitive games so Hyde is going to be very deliberate with his pitching changes. The Orioles of the 2000's were often getting their brains beat in so it's easier to let a mop up pitcher go 2 or 3 innings.
    • Good, competitive MLB teams don't usually go through all the trouble to change out roster spots and 40-man spots for a theoretical 2% advantage from the 26th guy on the roster. I pretty much guarantee Elias isn't jumping at the chance to get Pillar over McKenna because he feels a little more like a winner.
